Black History: Chairman Fred Hampton

2On December 4th, 1969, Fred Hampton, an African American activist, deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party was murdered while sleeping in his apartment during a raid by a tactical unit of the Cook County, Illinois State’s Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This activity was in concert by the infamous seditious FBI program known as COINTELPRO designed to eliminate activist deemed by its director as “subversive”.

“We expected about twenty Panthers to be in the apartment when the police raided the place. Only two of those black niggers were killed, Fred Hampton and Mark Clark.” FBI Special Agent Gregg York

Chairman Fred, as he was known, was successful and revered for organizing young African Americans for the NAACP. He was quickly attracted to the Black Panthers’ approach, which was based on a ten-point program of a mix of black designed for the survival of the black community. Chairman Fred joined the Party’s nascent Illinois chapter SNCC organizer Bob Brown in late 1967. Over the next year, Hampton and his associates made a number of significant achievements in Chicago. Perhaps his most important accomplishment was his brokering of a nonaggression pact between Chicago’s most powerful street gangs.

Emphasizing that racial and ethnic conflict between gangs would only keep its members entrenched in poverty, he strove to forge a class-conscious, multi-racial alliance between the Panther Party, the Young Patriots and the National Young Lords. Soon after the pact was formed they were joined by the Students for a Democratic Society, the Blackstone Rangers, the Brown Berets, and the Red Guard. In May 1969, Hampton called a press conference to announce that a truce had been declared among this “rainbow coalition,” a phrase coined by Hampton and made popular later by Jesse Jackson, who eventually appropriated the name in forming his own unrelated coalition, Rainbow/Push.

This achievement marked him as a major threat in the eyes of the FBI, signaled his death. Subsequent investigations have shown that FBI chief Hoover was determined to prevent the formation of a cohesive Black movement in the United States “by any means necessary. Hoover saw the Panthers, and similar radical coalitions forged by Hampton in Chicago, as a frightening stepping stone toward the creation of just such a revolutionary body that could cause a radical change in the U.S. government.

They opened a file on Hampton in 1967 that over the next two years expanded to twelve volumes and over four thousand pages. By May of that year, Chairman Fred’s name was placed on the “Agitator Index” and he would be designated a “key militant leader for Bureau reporting purposes.

In late 1968, the Racial Matters squad of the FBI’s Chicago field office brought in an individual named William O’Neal, who had recently been arrested twice, for interstate car theft and impersonating a federal officer. In exchange for dropping the felony charges and a monthly stipend, O’Neal apparently agreed to infiltrate the Black Panther Party as a counterintelligence operative. He joined the Party and quickly rose in the organization, becoming Director of Chapter Security and Hampton’s bodyguard.

In 1969, the FBI Special Agent in San Francisco wrote Hoover that his investigation of the Black Panther Party revealed that in his city, at least, the Panthers were primarily feeding breakfast to children. Hoover fired back a memo implying the career ambitions of the agent were directly related to his supplying evidence to support Hoover’s view that the Panthers were “a violence-prone organization seeking to overthrow the Government by revolutionary means”. Hoover was willing to use false claims to attack his political enemies. In one memo, he wrote: “Purpose of counterintelligence action is to disrupt the BPP, and it is immaterial whether facts exist to substantiate the charge.”

By means of anonymous letters, the FBI sowed distrust and eventually instigated a split between the Panthers and the Rangers, with O’Neal himself instigating an armed clash between the two on April 2, 1969. The Panthers became effectively isolated from their power base, so the FBI went to work to undermine its ties with other radical organizations.

O’Neal was instructed to “create a rift” between the Party and Students for a Democratic Society, whose Chicago headquarters was only blocks from that of the Panthers. The Bureau released a batch of racist cartoons in the Panthers’ name, aimed at alienating white activists, and launched a disinformation program to forestall the realization of the “Rainbow Coalition.” In repeated directives, J. Edgar Hoover demanded that the COINTELPRO personnel “destroy what the Black Panther Party stands for” and “eradicate its ‘serve the people’ programs”.

In early October, Hampton and his girlfriend, Deborah Johnson, pregnant with their first child Fred Hampton, Jr., rented a four-and-a-half room apartment on 2337 West Monroe Street to be closer to Black Panther Party headquarters. O’Neal reported to his superiors that much of the Panthers’ “provocative” stockpile of arms was being stored there. None of which was true but the paid government informant played the role of Judas bringing the powers of the state to kill him.

To see how far great powers will go is shocking and a moral shame. Yet, it continues today. And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

On This Day: They Assassinated Chairman Fred Hampton

11There have been countless murders of black men, since the founding of America, but the assassination of Fred Hampton speaks loudly to the abuse and corruption of the American police departments. Since the Nat Turner Incident they, white folk, will never allow a black person to rise with suburb leadership skills. History demonstrates the penalty for such a strong black man is death!

On December 4th, 1969, Fred Hampton, an African American activist, and deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party was murdered. Chairman Fred was assassinated while slept in his apartment during a raid by a tactical unit of the Cook County, Illinois State’s Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This activity was in concert by the infamous seditious FBI program known as COINTELPRO designed to eliminate activist deemed by its director as “subversive.”

A public statement made to the news media a day after the assassination by FBI Special Agent Gregg York, “We expected about twenty Panthers to be in the apartment when the police raided the place. Only two of those black niggers were killed, Fred Hampton and Mark Clark.”

Commentary: American Terror Worse Than ISIS

2The American government intrudes in the lives of people all over the word in the so-called war on terror claiming they want to end it. The impetus being that in most cases that hate and anger is what they created. I do not subscribe to the theory that ISIS is the boogie man promoted as the evilest group of people on the planet.

In my view the system of white supremacy and those who maintain it takes first prize. There is hundreds of years of history and evidence to prove it. Naturally, white folk will disagree, and they have for four hundred years. But as recent news accounts demonstrate the terrorist are here in America and are being paid by the government.

During yesterday’s news conference in Chicago, all the talk was about praise for the police and, of course, the usual plea’s for peace. The mayor surrounded himself with a bunch of “chicken pickin” uncles and black people to say “we are one city.” Now, the mayor and everyone knew this was murder over a year ago and saw the video, On top of that they even paid off the family. So this was no new revelation. They were doing what they have always done, try to sweep this story under the rug. I am so sick and tired of hearing about “all the good cops” because there are none. If there are so many good cops, where the hell are they while this terror is being inflicted upon the black community?

The terror is not only coming from the police but the white community in general. They compare the Black Lives Matter Movement to the KKK. Yet, over the weekend protesters from the group were shot and wounded in Minneapolis as they protested one of the hundreds of police killings of a black man. Police say they are seeking for three suspects, described as two white males and an Asian male, who were captured yesterday. The men, described by protesters as white supremacists had been taunting and provoking protesters, and were being escorted out of the area when the men pulled weapons and began firing.

The protesters were demonstrating the death of Jamar Clark, 24, on Nov. 15 in a police confrontation. Multiple witnesses have said Clark was shot in the head while handcuffed, a description that police dispute. Authorities have refused to release available video of the shooting, which reportedly recorded only portions of the confrontation. This is also what happened in Chicago. It took a court order to make the city release the very disturbing video of that police murder.

For two years, we have witnessed a murder by police at the rate of one black man, woman, and child a week. So far neither the system nor white folk seems to see a problem here, even when each recorded video is worse than the last. Here’s what we do know: THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT BLACK LIFE.

This case was so bad that Chicago authorities offered and paid the McDonald family a $5 million settlement last summer before the family had even filed suit. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the city paid out $14 million to settle allegations of police misconduct and brutality between 2006 and 2012, yet officers in almost all of those cases no cop faced any disciplinary action. A police review panel established last year to review allegations has handled 439 cases; none has resulted in officer discipline.

In the Chicago murder, it remains to be seen whether the result of this murder charge will produce a conviction – highly doubtful! But the Chicago police officer is now charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 17-year-old black male more than 13 months ago. It will be the first such indictment in 35 years in Chicago. The victim, Laquan McDonald, had been in possession of PCP and armed with a three inch knife, which was closed, but the long suppressed video of that shooting apparently shows McDonald walking away from police when an officer jumps out of a police car, and in 30 seconds fires at him and hits him 16 times. No other officer on the scene fired.

Egregious as this apparently is, the case probably would have been ignored if not for the video, in the same way, most killing and brutality case have in the past. Yet, even with video it seems not to matter much. The police union, the so-called brotherhood, for example, had claimed that the officer fired after McDonald lunged at him with a knife; there is apparently no evidence of that in the video, which was released by order of the court. This tells me that the city and police had something to hide.

The New York Times has reported, this year alone more than 99 percent of citizen complaints concerning police misconduct were dismissed with no action taken. Given that overall record, it would seem safe to assume that the 28,000 official complaints comprise only a fraction of such incidents. In the rare cases in which action was taken, black officers were twice as likely to be disciplined as their white colleagues.

The officer, who shot McDonald, Jason Van Dyke, had 18 complaints filed against him, including allegations of brutality and racism. No action had been taken on any of them.

It’s a pretty straightforward principle: Those whom we entrust to enforce the law deserve our full support. But that support does not and cannot imply a de facto exemption from that same law, nor any immunity from judgment and accountability. And while that principle applies regardless of the race of officer or citizen, black Americans have a legitimate reason to believe that when it is violated, they are disproportionately its victims.

They talk about ISIS and terror in other places. I say the black man’s fight is not with ISIS, rather it is about the terror inflicted upon black people here in America on main street USA! And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

I came across this article written by Ricardo A. Hazell is a veteran journalist whose writings has been featured in a number of prominent newspapers and magazines. It is a rather lengthy article, so I will repost excerpts and add a link at the end for you to follow to read the entire article. I found this article to be excellent and on point, which is why I am sharing it.

CORRUPTED AND COMPLACENT LAW ENFORCEMENT: THE SWARD OF WHITE SUPREMACY?

So many American men of African descent live in a soul-splitting world of conflicting existences. As Americans were are taught that we have inalienable rights; but as a Black men, we know that is a half-truth at best.

For me, at no time has that duality been more apparent amid the American-based African Diaspora than in the years since the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012. The affair brought to the surface all that is racist and reprehensible about American society for all who gazed upon it. The aggressor was made to be the victim and the victim was said to have been implicit in his or her own death.

From Trayvon Martin to Eric Garner to Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott and Freddie Gray, America tells us they caused their own death, and a significant portion of the African American populous believes America and that it is correct in their conclusions.

What about the Black people who are in constant agreement with suspected racists, conservatives and tea party members whenever the police “accidentally” shoot a suspect for whatever reason they and the state attorney can agree sounds plausible enough to slip by a jury? Claiming that Rekia Boyd and Aiyana Stanley-Jones were anomalies, and that John Crawford and Darrien Hunt, both whom were shot while carrying toy facsimiles of a rifle and samurai sword, respectively, were somehow in the wrong.

These Drop Squad candidates will say that we must align ourselves with the police to protect ourselves from the hordes within our own community. They make concessions for those that shoot, beat and torture Black men and rape, assault and murder Black women by saying it’s a tough job and that these are anomalies rather than by design.

According to a graph created by ABCNews.com, 40 percent of all homicides committed in the United States between 2009 and 2011 were gang related. That number sounds awfully high to me but, admittedly, I am biased. With the way race based policing methods terrorize the inner city, it is my strong suspicion that a number of those alleged gang-related murders were actually conducted by the police. The city of Chicago is notorious for the rampant race based brutality and misconduct within its police department.

With knowledge of the racism that proliferates the history of civilian policing in the United States since its advent, my conscience could come to no other conclusion. And that’s only considering cops who are being racists, not to mention the officers who use the badge to disguise the deeds they commit that aren’t purposefully being racist but rather money and power motivated.

Officers like Detroit’s William “Robocop” Melendez, who is alleged to have been the leader of a crew of 17 officers who planted drugs, made false accusations against innocent individuals and terrorized the communities under their watch. He beat the charges despite significant evidence to the contrary. He has not been convicted of any charges and still works in law enforcement in Motown to this very day.

Then there’s the case of former NYPD Detective Stephen Anderson, who in 2011 testified in a massive corruption investigation that he and at least eight other officers engaged in planting evidence on innocent people to maintain arrest quotas in Brooklyn and Queens.

When asked by New York City Justice Gustin Reichbach whether he had witnessed others conducting shady business, Anderson replied:

“Yes, multiple times. It was something I was seeing a lot of, whether it was from supervisors or undercovers and even investigators,” he said.

“It’s almost like you have no emotion with it, that they attach the bodies to it, they’re going to be out of jail tomorrow anyway; nothing is going to happen to them anyway.”

Whether the police are being racist or just plain criminal, their actions still help propagate the White supremacist charter in one way or another.

In 2006, the Federal Bureau of Investigations released a report on how white supremacists and Neo Nazis had been infiltrating police departments across the nation and carrying out their ideologies in the line of duty and under the guise of law enforcement.

It was found that the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department had been infiltrated by Neo Nazis and engaged in a campaign of terror in Black communities across L.A. County. Former Chicago Police Department Detective Jon Burge was fired after it was revealed he had ties to the Klu Klux Klan and that he had tortured more than 100 Black male suspects in the line of duty.

Recent findings by the Department of Justice and Secretary General Eric Holder suggest that racism is the way things are done in police departments across the country, and have been for decades if not longer.

New Orleans, LA. Ferguson, Missouri. Philadelphia, PA and now the Cleveland (OH) Police Department have drawn the ire of these scathing reports. Racist, ineffective, irreparably damaged with a tendency to be heavy handed whenever coming into contact with Black folks, but there are still those of blue-black hue who would deem the gestapo police methods of many inner city police departments as being necessary to curb the tide of the alleged savages.
