COINTELPRO Killed The Movement

2We know the government has gangs starting with the police and those identified by alphabets: CIA, IRS, FBI, and so on! I speak on this because there is a new movement and I would suggest they beware of the government. Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act some of the secrecy that surrounded these agencies have been revealed. Yes, times have changed but did things change behind the walls of these groups. One of these alphabet groups in particular viewed Dr. Martin Luther King as the “most dangerous man in America”.

This group, the FBI, had a secret program known as COINTELPRO, short for Counterintelligence Program, used to disrupt the activities of supposed Communist Party in the United States. In the 1960s, it was expanded to include a number of other domestic groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan, the Socialist Workers Party, and the Black Panther Party. However, their activities had a devastating effect on all black groups working for Civil Rights or black empowerment to include many black leaders.

COINTELPRO was discovered in March 1971 when secret files were removed from an FBI offices and released to the news media. Freedom of Information requests, lawsuits, and former agents’ public confessions deepened the exposure until a major scandal loomed. To control the damage and re-establish government legitimacy in the wake of Vietnam and Watergate. Congress and the courts compelled the FBI to reveal part of what it had done and to promise it would not do it again.

This is/was how it worked. The FBI secretly instructed its field offices to propose schemes to misdirect, discredit, disrupt and otherwise neutralize specific individuals and groups. Close coordination with local police and prosecutors was encouraged. Final authority rested with top FBI officials in Washington, who demanded assurance “there is no possibility of embarrassment to the Bureau.” More than 2000 individual actions were officially approved. The documents reveal three types of methods:

  1. Infiltration: Agents and informers did not merely spy on political activists. Their main function was to discredit and disrupt. Various means to this end are analyzed below.
  2. Other forms of deception: The FBI and police also waged psychological warfare from the outside–through bogus publications, forged correspondence, anonymous letters and telephone calls, and similar forms of deceit.
  3. Harassment, intimidation and violence: Eviction, job loss, break-ins, vandalism, grand jury subpoenas, false arrests, frame- ups, and physical violence were threatened, instigated or directly employed, in an effort to frighten activists and disrupt their movements. Government agents either concealed their involvement or fabricated a legal pretext. In the case of the Black and Native American movements, these assaults–including outright political assassinations–were so extensive and vicious that they amounted to terrorism on the part of the government.

After his initial success, Hoover unleashed his agents against a wide range of political groups. The most prominent targets were civil rights organizations, such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the more radical groups; such as the Black Panther Party, the American Indian Movement, and the Socialist Workers party. Another target was the nation’s oldest white hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. However, Hoover was far less enthusiastic about pursuing the Klan and did so chiefly because of political pressure in spite of the Klan’s highly publicized murders of civil rights workers.

It was discovered that at least twenty documented burglaries of the offices of the SCLC, an organization headed by Dr. King, who Hoover detested calling him “one of the most reprehensible … individuals on the American scene today.” He urged his agents to use “imaginative and aggressive tactics” against King and the SCLC. To this end, agents bugged King’s hotel rooms; tape-recorded his infidelities, and mailed a recording, along with a note urging King to commit suicide, to the civil rights leader’s wife.

The COINTELPRO operation against the radical Black Panther Party, which Hoover considered a Black Nationalist hate group tried to pit the party’s leaders against each other while also fomenting violence between the Panthers and an urban gang. In at least one instance, FBI activities did lead to violence. In 1969, an FBI informant’s tip culminated in a police raid that killed Illinois Panther chairman Fred Hampton and others. More than a decade later, the federal government agreed to pay restitution to the victims’ survivors, and a federal judge sanctioned the bureau for covering up the facts in the case.

The government feared an uprising from black or the rise of a “Mau Mau” [Black revolutionary army] in America and the beginning of a true black revolution. This program was intended to prevent the RISE OF A “MESSIAH” who could unify, and electrify the militant Black Nationalist movement.  Malcolm X might have been such a “messiah;” he is the martyr of the movement today. Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, and Elijah Muhammad all aspire to this position, although Elijah Muhammad was less of a threat because of his age. However, it is widely believed COINTELPRO was behind the assassination of Malcolm X, and it is not known the extent of the activities or exactly how many people.

The goal was to prevent respectability by discrediting leaders in three separate segments of the community. You must discredit those groups and individuals to, first, the responsible Negro community. Second, they must be discredited to the white community, both the responsible community and to “liberals” who have vestiges of sympathy for militant Black Nationalist [sic] simply because they are Negroes. Third, these groups must be discredited in the eyes of Negro radicals, the followers of the movement.

Finally, and more significant was to prevent the long-range GROWTH of militant black organizations, especially among youth. COINTELPRO was the instrument used to kill the movement! And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

Commentary: The Ferguson Effect

th (4)Well, Well, Well!!! Over the weekend, I heard the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. America’s Top Cop said, in essence, cops are afraid to do their jobs because of the Ferguson Effect. Is he admitting that their job is to kill unarmed black people or that they are doing wrong and don’t want people to evidence it? Frankly, no one thinks this is true, not even him, unless maybe the folks at the FOP, who are paid to make sure the cops get off when they kill. If what he said has any merit, fire them for not doing their job like anybody else.

In light of the horrible history of his agency I thought, at first, old man Hoover visited him in his sleep. I am sure this guy knows the history of his agency when Hoover had a vendetta against the black community. My entire life I have known, read about, seen police brutality and corruption by cops. Just a reminder for those who didn’t know, the primary reason the Black Panthers were formed, carried guns openly was because of extreme police misconduct, and abuse upon the black community. Remember, Hoover versus Dr. King; Hoover versus the Black Panthers, Freed Hampton or any other black organization trying to secure equal right for black people. Or maybe he forgot about COINTELPRO!

Now, the conversation has shifted to Black Lives Matter Organization comparing them to the Klug Klux Klan with attempts to demonize the group and shut them down. In my opinion, this guy and his agency should be out front leading the charge for better law enforcement. But it is not! It sounds like he is providing cover or attempting to cast shade on the evil being perpetrated by these shameful police actions against black people. The American people have every right to protest against the almost daily killing of unarmed black people.

Let me recap; Comey’s statement blamed the increase in shootings and killings, in part, on the frequency of civilians reaching for their smartphones to document anything from traffic stops to protests. On Friday, he told several hundred students at the University of Chicago Law School the “era of viral videos” has led officers to feel they’re “under siege” and unwilling to get out of their cars.

The New York Times reported several people at the Justice Department “privately fumed” at the remarks. The White House on Monday slammed FBI Director Comey’s notion that pervasive cell phone footage featuring police actions has led to an uptick in violent crime. Earnest said there was no evidence to back up Comey’s statements. “In fact, you hear law enforcement leaders across the country indicating that that’s not what’s taking place,” Earnest said.

Comey also said, the prevalence of drugs and guns may be to blame. On Monday, he reiterated to a group of law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police that he had a “strong sense” officers were changing their behavior for fear of being caught on camera. Does he not get it, that is the exact reason for videotaping the despicable behavior because their superiors are doing nothing to stop the lawlessness taking place in the police ranks. Everybody knows and can see the behavior we have seen within the racks is downright despicable.

As if he does not believe there is something called the First Amendment; he went on to say, “Each time somebody interprets [the] hashtag ‘Black Lives Matter’ as anti-law enforcement, one line moves away, and each time that someone interprets [the] hashtag ‘Police Lives Matter’ as anti-black, the other line moves away,”.  He said, using an analogy of two lines, one representing law enforcement and the other local communities.

Those folks preach about all the good cops out there and praise them as heroes. Seems to me, if there are so many good cops, where are they when the bad ones are doing and inflicting terror on the community, particularly black communities around this country. Is it because Ferguson exposed the diabolical actions of the police that he is referring too that some change is taking place. Maybe that why he says the Ferguson Effect is dangerous.

The remarks noted in his presentation lend no credence to the so-called Ferguson Effect; even though Comey has conceded himself there is little evidence to support this theory. In case you don’t know the term is named after last year’s unrest in Missouri, which was coined after the killing of Michael Brown and linked the rise in violent crime to harsh scrutiny over officers’ use of force. In fact, the rise in murder rates, which launched the notion that “#BlackLivesMatter Costs Black Lives,” has drawn harsh criticism mainly from the right wing folks and conservatives.

The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates has adamantly stated, and I agree, “There is no Ferguson effect” and called the link between crime and less-aggressive policing “utterly baseless.” Why doesn’t he and others see that what they call law enforcement, we call a gang of lawless thugs who are nothing more than an occupying force, who operate with impunity in the use of force against the people who they are paid to protect and serve. Let me say this – I have never in my entire life had a positive encounter with the police. So dude, what you proclaim is as much a fantasy as Peter Pan!!! And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

On The Shoulders Of Giants

1004795_10201334073855180_857894681_nIn a week or so America will celebrate Black History Month. This annual celebration of the contributions African American’s have made to the history of America and the World. Many may be shocked that I say this but honestly, “it is nothing more than a sham”. It is designed to tell black people what was erased from their consciousness throughout American history, which I like to call “His-Story.”

I would argue that when the African was taken from Africa and a new race was created called a Negro with the history of Africa, and its people left on the continent. Frankly, it was little more than a hundred year were people of African descent were given a certificate of birth. What was used was a “bill of sale”. For this reason, everything we know and were told is a whitewashed version of the truth; in other words a lie!

During this month, they highlight names of about ten that they have rewritten their stories to fit a narrative that appeals to them. Rarely, is Demark Vassey or Nate Turner part of the conversation or discussion. Also, never mentioned is any talk or discussion of Reparations or equal justice for black people who have been and continue to face terror daily. Some say the police are out of control or overly aggressive – “I say they are doing what they were designed and created to do!” Protect and Serve is not their mission, rather to occupy!

This is not a new phenomenon that started in Ferguson the many killings recently. It dates back to the slave catchers and beyond. I am sure you remember the regular lynching’s of the past, like the recent killing that occurred weekly! Let me remind you, the problem was equally as bad in as bad in the early twentieth century and the 1960s, and the primary reason the Black Panther Party was founded to address, in part, the terror at the hands of the police upon citizens in black communities. The reaction to the group was extermination and more terror coming from the top law enforcement agency and its director through what was called COINTELPRO!

We cannot continue to allow “them” to direct the narrative of who they want us to be or know. It has been far too long that black people have allowed others to define who we are and shape our minds in their image. In addition, this system of injustice was stated in the Constitution that black people were never intended to be citizens – upheld and confirmed by the Dred Scott Decision and Plessey v Ferguson.

The point of this writing is to ask that you look deeper into the history of black people this month and teach the children that there were more than five or six black people of significance in our history. You have heard the saying “Reach One – Teach One”. Well, it’s your responsibility to teach your children that we stand on the shoulders of giants. In addition, they must understand that they must replace the fallen in order to fight the forces of evils determined to eliminate an entire race of people. Black History is American History! I might be proud and say it’s true, if only we were viewed as American’s! And that’s my thought provoking perspective…
