Political Theater

thumbnail (1)

Politics has been so ridicule lately that I have not found it worth the words to render a perspective. For example, congress wastes its time voting to repeal what they call Obamacare – again. Yesterday was the thirty-eighth attempt, as if this time would be the charm. Then there are the concocted scandals with talk of impeaching the president. The conservatives will take ever opportunity to attack the president, whether he has anything to do with it or not.

I read Ruth Marcus’ column this morning and this is what she calls the trifecta of scandals:

Benghazi. With the e-mail chain released, the chief takeaway should be this administration’s remarkable capacity to be its own worst enemy. It has managed to look as if it were executing a cover-up without having anything to cover up. The real scandal of Benghazi remains what previous inquiries concluded — that “systemic failures” of leadership resulted in “grossly inadequate” security.

Internal Revenue Service. With the Treasury Department inspector general’s report released, the chief takeaway should be the bureaucracy’s remarkable capacity for incompetence and stupidity. “My question is who’s going to jail over this scandal?” House Speaker John Boehner thundered Wednesday. Mr. Speaker, I hate to disappoint you, but no one. Unless we’ve criminalized idiocy, in which case, better start building more prisons.

Associated Press leak probe. This one hits close to home, and while the Justice Department insists that it subpoenaed the phone records only after exhausting other avenues of investigation, the net it cast — records from more than 20 phone lines used by about 100 journalists — remains incomprehensibly, chillingly broad. How nice for the president to now renew his call for a reporter’s shield law, having previously worked to water down the proposal. Talk about the horse and the barn.

She when on to say, “bad things happen in second-term presidencies, often in clumps. This is no coincidence; first-term chickens come home to roost in a second term. The inevitable arrogance bred by winning reelection never helps. But this bad run demands perspective.

I agree that after this some perspective is required. There have been real scandals by past presidents like Katrina, Monica Lewinsky, Iran-contra, or Water Gate. I might go further and say what Kennedy did not do while southern justice attacked African Americans for protesting peacefully. It is amazing when there is a GOP scandal they circle the wagon and call it the growing pains of democracy. No big deal when it’s them. For example, the selling of drugs connected to Iran-contra. No big deal.

More recently, the last administration lied to take us to war and wrecked the economy. Not to mention that this congress is the most ineffective congress ever, which they lead. Yet, they waist time with these matters instead of, say, closing GITMO, bring the troops home, filling presidential appointments, passing a jobs bill and I could go on and on.

The issue with Benghazi is that four Americans died, and my sympathy’s go to those families, but can the thousands who died in the wars that I say caused greater damage resulting from their lies in both cost and death. The last president was able to pass legislation with sweeping intrusions upon our freedom via the Patriot Act but when this president looks into AP leaks to protect the nation, he is chided.

Has President Obama done a good job – YES! He has faced opposition from the right at every turn unlike the last administration. They never mention how bad the republicans screwed up the country prior to him taking the office. Yet, they cry “the American people” at every opportunity. Maybe these folk should realize that their job is not to administer the politics of shame. And that’s my Thought Provoking Perspective…

Be Still & Know

Book imageAbout The Book

Bitterness and deception always manage to find their way to the surface. Be Still & Know is a novel about finding love after devastating heartbreak and the challenges of learning to trust again.

Kai Bennett never believed that she was worthy of love. Too many years of being mistreated left her bitter and uncertain of her own self-worth. Finding validation in men, money, and trinkets, she has little use for a man becoming a permanent fixture in her life. That was until she met Alvin. What starts as a game of cat and mouse quickly develops into something Kai is unsure she is ready to handle.

Alvin Reigns discovered long ago that in love, there were no happy endings. He had fallen in love once, and vowed to never again allow any woman that much control over his heart. Kai Bennett was an unexpected surprise who made him want to believe in the possibility of a happy ending. After many years of self-preservation, Alvin is unsure if he should trust Kai with his heart.  How will Alvin and Kai learn to trust and create their own happy ending?

Fiscal Cliff and You

cliffWhere do I begin with Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Maj. Leader Mitch McConnell working on a compromise for the “fiscal cliff”? Or should I be more radical and quote Malcolm X and say we are being “Hoodwinked”! Nah, I will just give you my “Thought Provoking Perspective”. Minorities, particularly people of African American decent have been over the cliff since August of 1619!

Let me speak to the point; it is neither our president nor the Senate, any emerging agreement will be damaged by the Tea Party lead House of Representatives. An alleged deal was proposed that would prevent the automatic spending cuts and tax increases that technically went into effect at 12AM last night. Last night a proposed deal passed the Senate 89-8 vote where as of this writing the bought and paid for House the House of Representatives disagrees and over the cliff we go.

The Senate fiscal cliff deal includes the following important provisions:

  • Bush Tax Cuts – The deal would maintain tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 and couples earning less than $450,000. It would also push the capital gains tax rate to 20 percent for individuals earning over $400,000 and families earning over $450,000.
  • Unemployment Protection – Federal unemployment insurance would be extended for one year under last night’s compromise.
  • Payroll Taxes – The payroll tax cut, which benefits working men and women, would expire as part of this compromise. Republicans, who favor tax cuts for the rich, have always opposed this tax cut, which benefits wage earners.
  • Stimulus – As part of this compromise, three credits will be extended for one year; the Earned Income Credit, America’s Opportunity Credit, and Child Tax Credit.
  • Estate Tax – The estate tax, which was set to revert back to its Clinton levels, where it was taxed at 55 percent tax rate, will get an exemption of $5 million and a 40 percent rate after that.
  • Itemized Deductions – – Itemized deductions would be capped for those making $250,000 and for married couples making $300,000.

The bill faces an uphill battle in the House of Representatives, where some Democrats and Republicans oppose the bill. One is most striking about the bill is how it ends the payroll tax credit, one of the only credits which directly benefits American workers. The Working Pay Credit, another credit for working Americans, was ended in 2010.

The Republican House’s refusal to compromise on this issue for the American people, the economy, and the good of the nation is tantamount to a crime that should be prosecuted under the RICO Statute. I don’t claim to be anything of a political scholar. Rather, just a man with the ability to reason and use common sense. You can bet it will be the least of thee who will lose.

Therefore, I say the hatred for the president should not be significant enough to destroy the lives of millions of American families. And that’s my Thought Provoking Perspective…

Something To Think About!

The culture of violence is pervasive in American, yet we stand silent. The problem is the inherent embedded code of evil that rests within the minds of far too many. We have seen the horror inflicted on the streets of our communities, in homes, and schools. Some will say “more guns” while sanity will say “ENOUGH”!

Think about this while your family surrounds the Christmas tree to open the gifts – it may be the last time. And that’s my Thought Provoking Perspective…

TELL THE NRA ENOUGH!!!

nraToday insanity raised its head once again. The National Rifle Association (NRA) held a press conference today and demanded more access to guns be protected in the wake of the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The organization’s vice president said today that “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. This is as ridiculous as those saying teachers and janitors should carry guns in America’s school. SMH!

When we keep doing what we’ve always done. You keep getting what you always got. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! And that’s my Thought Provoking Perspective…

If You Missed It!!!

fraserIf you did not have an opportunity to listen to Mr. George Fraser’s return appearance on The Book Tree Radio Show’s “In The Spotlight” segment last night. The highly sought after speaker and author graciously came back to deliver an awesome message to “us”. His commentary was so awe-inspiring that I was compelled to share it with you, my vast network, because Mr. Fraser used my platform to speak to the African American community and beyond.

Mr. Fraser spoke to my audience with concerned compassion as he addressed the state of a people. One of his friends noted that George is a “Fountain of Information” adding that he is and OCEAN of knowledge! In order to truly appreciate the wealth of knowledge he has to share just listen to him for any length of time and you will feel infinitely smarter. With that said, I invite you to listen to the gift of his interview and I hope you will realize this as truth.

Dare I say, the African American community has not had anything close to committed leadership since we lost Malcolm and Martin (I say that endearingly because they were ours). I lived during the time of great men. I have met a few presidents, the Mandela’s; sport stars, entertainers, Politians, and a host of great thinkers. Of course, Muhammad Ali, The Greatest of all times, is my all time hero to which I had a top five of list luminaries that I idolized. I say that to say after spending several hours with Mr. Fraser he now holds the number two spot – bar none!

I want to personally thank my friend George Fraser for his commitment, concern, and devotion to a community of people who stand on the shoulders of giants, and George you are one of those giants. So friends, followers, listeners, ladies and gentlemen – please listen to this powerful message and lets change the lives of our children, and by extension our community. And that’s my Thought Provoking Perspective…
