Fight The Power!

PhotoFunia-2c3d3a4In the 1960s, the main mission was to obtain the freedom for black people. The symbol of solidarity was a raised clenched fist and the chant was “power to the people”. This sign of unity was also a sign of respect for one another.

It was a glorious time for Black America in the late 1960s because for a brief moment, it was awakened, they stand a stand and showed bravery as courageous black men and women demonstrate their pride for being black and began to acknowledge the greatness in their blackness.

During those days, there was an ill-fated war where the government drafted millions of black men during the Vietnam War. I can recall those fought and served were soon forgotten, but those who did were proud enough to take a stand by chanting “fight the power”! The response from the power, however, was told “America Love it or Leave it.” First, where were black people suppose to go? They took us from our place of origin, enslaved all brought here, and created a new race of people calling them Negro. So, the chant and the raised fist was a symbolic statement – “say it loud I am black, and I am proud”.

Looking back, I think what we learned was that the philosophy prescribed to us by the system and a continuous stream of unanswered questions and lies; like we see today with several wars, police brutality and blatant racism. The foundation of the civil rights movement was supported by a religious ideology full of unquestioned answers fooling people into the idea that all you need to do is just pray. While the system used the tried and true strategy of divide and conquer to kill the movement.

The movement’s protest strategy of marching in the 1950s resulted in a few crumbs after unrest and rage produce fear in the majority community – in other words among the powers that be. In those days, “they” could control information via what were virtually state-owned newspapers and the two or three television networks. The unrest of those days were rooted in racism, as is today, but today the genie is out of the bottle because of this thing called social media and video cameras in the hands of almost everyone. Think about it – it was social media that caused the Arab Spring uprising that toppled several regimes and dictators.

The American super-power was involved preaching morality and trying to impose democracy all over the world while doing unspeakable horrors at home and abroad. The government released a Senate Terror Report, which clearly appeared as if it was America that was the terrorist sponsored by the state. I will say as a person of color and a descendant of slaves, America never had any moral authority to advise or dictate anything close to a moral or human high-ground toward or for black people. Regarding what they released, black people have seen much of the same terror inflicted upon them right here at home under its apartheid-like system.

They system has not changed; NO – it’s still all about money. What I see that is different, however, is that the entire world sees and knows what is being done to black people in America and that what black America has been saying all along is true and a fact. However, the movement of this generation, Black Live Matters is speaking truth to power and is courageous enough to take a stand against racism and injustice. This movement comes with people of all stripes, colors, and creeds protesting around the world.

What we saw in the 1960s was more of a rehearsal for what some called a revolution. Brother Gil Scott-Heron called it “Winter in America” and he told us that the revolution will not be televised. There was a revolution, however, they called it the Arab Spring and it was televised! Gill appeared, at the time to be on to something. Hence, the government used tools like CONINTELPRO to cripple and killed any such notion. Now, as we can see today resulting from the atrocities of government agencies and police human-rights violations “the revolution is being televised”.

Let me add this about empires and religion, the Republicans, as did the Romans before them, cheered on the Lions, as the Christians were being fed to them in giant arenas for pure spectator enjoyment. Sort of like those lynching of black men and police killing of late. What these people are doing to black people in the streets of America in the name of “justice” is no different from what was done by the Roman state against its people. Remember how that turned out.

To those who have and are charged with killing and brutalizing people of color and the least of thee; I say to you – there’s no honorable way to kill, no gentle way to destroy. There is nothing good about racism or the war upon black and brown communities – it is simply Hypocrisy!

History tells us that those who make peaceful revolution impossible or fail to change a system when it is broken will make violent revolution inevitable. In the 1960s, they stopped using lynching and used fire hoses and dogs. Today, they use the police to shoot and kill. So I say, Fight the Power! And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

Delivered Unto Evil

FB_IMG_14149397207070508The first thing I saw on my social media page after the Mid-term election results were confirmed was “God is Good”! There must have been hundreds of like comments one after another proclaiming or maybe asking God to take care of us. I agree if there was ever a time when we need his mercy – it is now, because we have just been delivered unto evil. Tuesday’s results affirmed some of the most extreme right-wing radicals ever elected to Congress in recent memory. Make no mistake the new crop of radicals have one goal and purpose, which is to destroy the black man – President Obama!

Let’s take a look at just a few of the extremists: Glenn Grothman, who won Wisconsin’s 6th District. Grothman wants to eliminate weekends and believes “no people…care about Kwanza…” He co-sponsored a bill that equated single-parenthood with child abuse. In addition…  agrees with Joni Ernst, known as the castrator, that there should be a personhood amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Everyone knows the Tea Party’s agenda to take back their country. The question then becomes – how far they want to take it back. Yet, white America voted these people into power in most cases overwhelmingly.

Then there is the House Speaker from North Carolina elected Senator once tacked an anti-abortion provision to a motorcycle safety bill that would have closed all but one of North Carolina’s abortion clinics. He also compared welfare to reparations, claiming the United States has “redistributed” “trillions of dollars over the years” — amounting to “de facto reparations.” In addition he, Tillis has stated, “What we have to do is find a way to divide and conquer the people who are on assistance.”

More frightening was the election of Mitch McConnell as the leader of the pack. This is the guy who has said on many occasions that it is his intent to “make this president a one term president” and to “repeal Obama Care”. For sure, we will see the war mongers come out and see that the rich get richer be it from harmful trade agreements and deregulation. Let’s not forget the privatization of Social Security and Medicaid. We will see investigation after investigation and yes – IMPEACHMENT of the president.

White America can take credit for this because they voted against their own interest to show their hatred for President Obama. I’m reminded of that old saying be careful what you ask for because you might get it. The history if this gang is clear. They have done nothing but obstruct and say no to everything that might benefit the American people. Now has the burden to produce!

It’s incumbent upon these far-right wing radicals to show it can accomplish something. My sense in these far-right radicals, who have said, they want their country back will take a from the time of reconstruction and we know how that worked out. Now might be a good time to ask God to Bless America because we’ve got some difficult times ahead. And that’s my thought provoking perspective.

Where did this guy come from???

I just have to talk about a news story that has blown my mind. So I’ll get right to the point and ask the question that everyone is thinking but have not asked. “Where did THEY get this Negro?” I am talking about Alvin Greene the Senate nominee who won the South Carolina Democratic primary this week. I guess I should say first that he is from South Carolina, which might explain or answer the question, as they have had their share of odd characters. Mr. Greene, and I use that loosely, has the distinction of being the first African American to win a major party nomination for U.S. Senate in the state and faces the Republican Party Senator or maybe Tea Bagger Jim DeMint in the general election.

Let me tell you a little about this character Greene before I agree with everyone else except those who planted him into the equation. He won the Democratic primary race in June of 2010 with 58% of votes cast despite virtually no campaigning, no campaign spending, no website, no computer, no cell phone, and had only one campaign sign. He was in the Army and Air Force before an involuntary honorable discharge to which he says is a long story. He is currently unemployed and lives with his father. Ok, so far, not so good.

The state Democratic Party chairperson says she has not seen Greene since he filed the papers to run. Clarendon County Democratic Party Chairman Cal Land told local newspaper The Item that local party leaders have never met Greene. Lend went on to say, he had not attended any local Democratic events and had not responded to any invitations to local stump meetings. He did not attend the state Democratic Party convention nor did he file the legally required forms with the Secretary of the Senate or the Federal Elections Commission. He also said Greene attempted to pay his $10,400 filing fee with a personal check, rather than a check from a campaign account.

Now, this is where it gets messy: The day after the primary election, the media reported that Greene was facing felony charges stemming from a November 2009 arrest for allegedly showing obscene internet photos to an 18 year old University of South Carolina student in a computer lab. As a result of these charges, the South Carolina Democratic Party issued a statement calling for Greene to step down, saying:

“We are proud to have nominated a Democratic ticket this year that, with the apparent exception of Mr. Greene, reflects South Carolina’s values. Our candidates want to give this state a new beginning without the drama and irresponsibility of the past 8 years, and the charges against Mr. Greene indicate that he cannot contribute to that new beginning. I hope he will see the wisdom of leaving the race.”

Greene has refused to bow out of the race and emphatically stated that “The Democratic Party has chosen their nominee, and we have to stand behind their choice. The people have spoken. We need to be pro-South Carolina, not anti-Greene.” When asked to explain how he won Tuesday’s primary, Greene rambles for a bit and then concludes “just hard work,” which frankly appears to be revolutionizing the definition of “hard work.” The interviewer posed a follows up question, “You didn’t hold any campaign functions, you had no campaign signs, no campaign literature, no website, how did you work to get the name out, I mean what did you physically do?” Greene said, “I did just simple old fashioned campaigning, nothing fancy or expensive.”

I am going to give him the benefit of doubt although I don’t believe any of that old fashion stuff. Baffling is to kind, but let’s say that all the stars lined up and God sent him to deliver South Carolina. Has anyone asked his position on anything? Well the only thing I have been about to find about his platform was “jobs, education and justice.”Let’s be mindful that the U.S. Senate has only had a few blacks elected to that office and never more than on at a time. So, are we supposed to be leave that this guy is the beneficiary of Martin Luther King’s – I have a dream?

There has been speculation that he might be a Republican plant in order to stir up trouble in the Democratic Party in order to ensure his opponent an easy victory. Could it be that the Republican’s crossed over casting their votes for him? House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and other have suggested that Greene is a plant and has called for an investigation into the primary. I will say this, and I have lived in America for a half century, this notion, particularly after hearing him speak, is as ridiculous as the Governor going for a hike on the Appalachian Trail.

Let me go back to the charges against him. The news report says he has not entered a plea or been indicted in connection with the obscenity charge. Greene asks: “I have not been indicted? Indicted? What does that mean?” His brother, according to reports, explained during an interview that a charge and an indictment are different things.

Greene’s now 19 accuser have said she didn’t know Greene was running. “I really wish I’d known before the election, so I could have said something so that people would have known who they were voting for.” She says, Greene asked her to look at pornography on his screen at a computer lab in a University of South Carolina dormitory and suggested, “Let’s go to your room.” Both her and her mother wants Greene to withdraw from the race adding one other thing: “We want this guy to crawl back under the rock he came from.” Enough said…
