Mourning In America: Welcome To The 1950’s

11When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, many assumed a “post-racial” America was upon us. They were fiercely wrong. People believed America had somehow reconciled its shameful racial history by electing a black man into the White House. It was merely good optics! As it turned out, one man alone could not undo the countless systemic issues that have plagued a country built on slavery. During Obama’s last year in office, we saw just how deeply wrong the idea of a “post-racial” era was with the rise of the alt-right movement and the racist attacks that have unfolded as a result of Donald Trump’s campaign for president.

Now that Trump is the president-elect we will see racism rise to a level not seen since the days of old. A few days ago we set the clocks back one hour; last night the clock was set back a half a decade. I have seen a lot over my years, racism that was unthinkable, but last night’s victory for Trump made me think of the coming “nightmare”! Many attributed Trump’s success to his ability to turn out white working-class voters. I say no; rather it was due to racism and bigotry, let’s be clear race was an important factor in this election.

“This was a white lash against a changing country… It was a white lash against a black president in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes.” Yeah, when they say they want to take their country back; you got a lot of white people who feel fervently believe that white people are losing America and Trump will be the champion of that motto! Dare I say, for all non-white people “there are some difficult days ahead!”

The history books will record last night and surely January 20th the day they took back their country by having allowed Donald Trump to be elected President of the United States. No doubt, the Democratic Party failed miserably. But something else was truly at play here. To ignore it or rubberneck around it might be convenient, but it’d be wrong. This victory was all about race and a repudiation of anything Obama has achieved.

Step one: millions of people will lose health insurance, stacking the Supreme Court with bigots, repealing every executive order Obama signed, appointing the shameless people that Trump has had around him, more concerning the appointment of a Rudy Giuliani or a Chris Christie as Attorney General!Or even reinstituting Slavery as he deports the Hispanics and bar all Muslims!!!

From the moment he announced his candidacy, Donald Trump ran a campaign of white supremacy and white pride. In fact, his true entry into presidential politics predated his bigoted, anti-immigrant announcement speech that he delivered in the summer of 2015. Instead, it was his attack on the very humanity of President Obama that signaled to the worst elements of our country that Donald Trump was a bigot with a very low bar for what he was willing to say or do to attack people of color.

Without a single shred of evidence, Trump insisted President Obama was not an American citizen but was born in Kenya or somewhere else other than the United States. None of this mattered to Trump or his growing base of bigots. All that mattered was that they now had a spokesperson that would openly and champion the cause of their bigotry and the more Trump embraced his role as a public bigot, the deeper, more dangerous, and uglier it got. Racism and bigotry is no longer in the shadows.

Before Donald Trump won the Republican nomination, his base was almost exclusively made up of white, rural conspiracy theorists and racists. So, when he announced his candidacy, Trump, fully understanding his base, launched right into calling Mexicans rapists and robbers. Of course, his base absolutely loved it. Then, he pledged to forcefully deport every undocumented immigrant in the country in two years or less. When pressed on specifics, he gave us little, but his base ate it up. Before long, his next significant announcement was that he would, as a policy, ban all Muslims from entering our country. Never mind the legality and logistics of such a thing, which say to hell with the constitution or any law.

Trump won the Republican nomination because he was driven by a philosophy of white supremacy, racism, bigotry, and xenophobia. It appealed so much to his base that they were willing to look past moral failures. This guy was endorsed by the KKK, favored by David Duke, beloved by neo-Nazis and white supremacist publications everywhere; Trump resonated so much with white America that they elected him President of the United States. Let’s hold our breath until the wall is built!

He was simply willing to appeal to the very worst instincts of our country, and it worked. In fact, the Republicans have had a plan to turn back the hands of time – like 1950. With Trump as president now the can! I have long since believed that the United States is deeply racist at its core. This election has confirmed it. The white people you know and think are your friends and neighbors voted for him. If ever the phrase God Bless America is needed and for those who pray – now is a good time to ask for it. And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

Thank You Mr. President

3We have witnessed something that no one, living or dead, ever thought possible. Therefore, I want to start by apologizing for not featuring our great president during Black History Month. He has certainly achieved more than any other person of African descent; by ascending to the president of these United States. Frankly, this was the most significant event in all of human history, or at least since the resurrection of Jesus.

Let me be very clear, becoming president with America’s horrible history of racism and bigotry. It shows the hatred white folks, who say they are not racist, have from day one obstructed every effort and have tried to deny him any credit for anything Mr. Obama has done, which was mainly to save a nation his predecessor nearly destroyed. I am certain, if this man had anything out, dirt, scandal or negative out there; these wretched Republicans and white folk would have exposed it.

They, mainly the Republicans, have openly called the first black President everything but a Nigger publicly. Sorry, I am wrong a few have! Nonetheless, they use code words that mean virtually the same thing. I don’t know about you, but I can remember what it was like under Bush, which was not too long ago, as well as know the history of all of the white presidents going back to the slave owners and segregationists. Of course, there are some who say he has not done enough for black folk, and I agree. But what I will say, just the optics of him being president has given black people and the world so much.

Here is a little background on this brilliant man; Barack Hussein Obama was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii – and yes, white people Hawaii is part of America. He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked as a civil rights attorney and taught Constitutional law at University of Chicago Law School between 1992 and 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004 and served in the US Senate until he became president. Nine months after his inauguration, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Pease Prize laureate.

During his first two years in office, Obama signed into law economic stimulus legislation in response to the Bush Administrations created Great Depression in the form of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. Other major domestic initiatives in his first term included the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often referred to as “Obamacare”; the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act; and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010.

In foreign policy, Obama ended U.S. military involvement in the Iraq War, increased U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, signed the New Start arms control treaty with Russia, ordered U.S. military involvement in Libya in opposition to Muammar Gaddafi, and ordered the military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. Obama was reelected president in November 2012, defeating the Republican nominee, and was sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2013.

These are some of the president’s professional accomplishments. Personally, I am proud of the president, however, in my view, he has not been the president for all people as he claims. He has not done much for black people, particularly in an age when unarmed black men, women, and children are murdered indiscriminately! After all, the Justice Department works for him, and he has the power to make changes in this area, as well as in the area concerning mass-incarceration, jobs, poverty, and education; and for that, I give him very low marks.

In spite of his lack of attention to black issues, it will sadden me to see him leave office and yes I will miss him. It is not so much the president that impresses me so much; rather, it is the example of his beautiful and lovely family who has demonstrated profound dignity and grace, making all people proud. And now that the bigots and corrupt people are about to take back their country – we will all miss you President Obama, we will all miss you when we see and feel Trumps America. We may never see the likes of him again! And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

Cause To Worry About The President

6I can vividly remember the assassinations of the 1960s that seemed to take-out everyone intent upon changing the American status quo. People, particularly white American’s, often use the old-adage today much in the same manner they did then, with statements like “what is the problem” when it comes to the issue of race, safety or basic human rights. The short answer is a simple one – “white privilege”! Yes, I know the usual response is “we had nothing to do with the wrongs of our forefathers.” I would accept that; if they did something to correct some of them or were not the beneficiaries of a system their forefathers established to protect their descendants!

We have seen outcomes in recent times where obvious and clear murder of black men in a number of cities around the country and heard the responses from white America; most of which are armed and seem to think it was the fault of the black men or boys killed. They go to great lengths to raise money and showed their support for the murderers, while on the other hand, when the bigot in Nevada and his gang of armed thugs stood down the government law enforcement authorities. They called it “Freedom of Speech”! Yet, the police put forth a militarized response against the peaceful protesters in Ferguson as if it was Bagdad!

This brings me to my concern for and safety of the first African American president to which the president, who has alluded to his own racial experiences. More to the point – in light of the recent and continued missteps from the law enforcement agency whose “job” it is to protect President Obama; we should be very concerned! I cannot remember where a protection force “let” people into White House virtually unimpeded or allow to be close as seen in recent events, as we have seen with this president.

Let’s put this in context historically; “they” killed President Kennedy, Dr. King, Malcolm X, and others. Yet, we learned this week that a man was allowed to stand beside the President Obama with a gun on his person in an elevator. This president, as reported, has received more threats against his life than any other president in history. Why, because he is black!

The republicans in congress have slashed budgets so drastically that has caused unreasonable cuts with regard to the agency assigned to protect Mr. Obama and his family. But they continue to dog him for the Bengasi situation, which was also the result of republican budget cuts. It is very interesting how they complain about the deficit while not providing the monies for the president’s protection.

However, in the interest of “war” the money is found and put forth to execute it immediately. It is reported that the new front in this never ending war costs around two billion dollars a day on top of the trillions spent over the last dozen years or so that we a know about.  Not to mention, these are the same people who involved America in the “so-called war on terror”, meaning the ill-fated invasion into Iraq, Afghanistan, as well as any other conflicts all over the world.

Now, moving to the present, the Secret Service is getting much-deserved chastising for an armed felon roaming free in the White House and the fence jumpers incidents. More serious are the leaks of President Obama’s travel schedule to then GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and a congressional imposter getting into an area where the President was at a Congressional Black Caucus function. The actions of what seems to be a JV-team responsible for these breeches cost the director her job and ignited cries for a total overhaul of the service. This is notwithstanding, a vote of no-confidence in the agency’s proper protection of the president, which might just be only the tip of the iceberg in assessing the peril to Obama.

The Secret Service has other woes on top of the at times sloppy way it has handled Obama’s security; namely staffing and being understaffed and under-resourced. The recent lapses also prompted a spate of complaints from unnamed Secret Service agents of overwork, low morale, and fear of job security; all of which has reportedly come from within. This is a recipe for disaster and it shows from the number of debacles!

If you can recall, there were major errors in the protection of Kennedy that day in Dallas by those charged with guarding his life. Yes, changes were made after the fact. There maybe some, but I do not want this president harmed or killed, nor his beautiful family, for something to be done to correct problems of protection that is so clearly suspect. It is shocking that not only have these incidents occurred but the agency failed to make mention to the president until it was reported in the news.

My prayers are with the president and his family because it appears that he is in great peril. And that’s my thought provoking perspective…

Guess Who Came To Dinner

So many times the phrase “look how far we’ve come” has been stated that makes one think that everything is alright. Watch this video and just imagine the insanity of racism. Most people don’t know that Booker T. Washington was invited to the White House at the beginning of the last century making him the first black to ever sit at a table with an american president for dinner, instead of serving the guests, and hundreds of blacks people were lynched as a result.

Today, the current president who is black now does the inviting of others. THINK ABOUT IT!!!  And that’s my Thought Provoking Perspective…
